OT Appreciates Neurodivergence-Affirming Practice
[Source: LeaderLive]
I am an occupational therapist working in a public school, who was pleased to read my daughter’s Leader magazine tonight. I greatly appreciate Jamie Burch’s article (“Affirming Neurodivergence: No More ‘Quiet Hands,’” November/December 2023), in which she advised all of us therapists, not just speech-language pathologists, that “Every person has the potential to develop their thinking, learning and understanding.” Thank you, Jamie, for the reminder that we all should “Increase intrinsic motivation by working on goals within topics and activities that are meaningful to clients …” Finally, she cautioned all of us that “Teaching children to conform to neurotypical social norms is inherently telling them to mask.”
