“The Goodenoughs Get in Synch” by Carol Kranowitz, MA, is a cute and informative book that walks you through an off day with each family member who has a different form of sensory processing disorder (SPD). SPD is a challenging disorder to explain and understand, but this book breaks down each type of disorder by character in an easy to understand way and how one situation causes the whole family to end up in the cozy doghouse. The author does a nice job of explaining how a person with any type of SPD could fall apart if their individual sensory needs are not met. The book shows how a particular situation impacts each family member through his or her eyes and what that person did or did not do to get in synch. The author allows you to see that each characters sensory needs are different based on their individual SPD and the activities that allow him to get through the day with positive experiences are unique to that character. The author allows you to walk through each person’s day and relate to how he discovers what keeps him together to be able to enjoy the sounds, smells, sights and feelings around him. This is a great book for a person with SPD as well as anyone associated with or working with people who have SPD. The dynamic illustrations and easy to follow characters allow anyone to be an expert on explaining and understanding SPD.

Sunita has been working with children with special needs since 1998 and as a pediatric occupational therapist since 2004. Sunita received her Masters of Science degree in occupational therapy at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Her experience includes working with children with austim spectrum disorders, cerebral palsy, trisomy 21, developmental delays, failure to thrive, stroke as well as rare genetic and orthopedic conditions. Sunita has received specialized training in Craniosacral Therapy, Sensory Integration techniques, Therapeutic Listening, Handwriting Without Tears, Greenspan’s Floortime Approach, Interactive Metronome, Wilbarger Protocols, Beckman Oral-Motor Assessment and Treatment Protocol and numerous courses in fine motor, visual-motor, sensory interventions and feeding/dysphagia treatment. Sunita currently works as the OT clinical coordinator for Pediastaff and also owns and manages a pediatric therapy clinic called Imagination Therapy. Her passion lies in helping children and their families understand Sensory Processing Disorder to help children live up to their highest potential.
